About Epsom Downs Racecourse
Epsom Racecourse is referenced in the diary of Samuel Pepys in 1663 and there are many other historical references that suggest this equine sport has been a firm favorite in the area for some time.
Two famous races The Oaks and The Derby were instigated here. In 1779 Edward Smith-Stanley, 12th Earl of Derby and his friends raced their three-year-old fillies in The Oaks, named after the Earl’s nearby estate.
The following year, a race featuring fillies and clots was added and that became The Derby.
In 1784 both races were extended to a mile and a half by the addition of the now famous Tattenham Corner.
Situated on the North Downs this is a very popular racecourse and hosts three Group 1 flat races.
