The Road to Silverstone
The Silverstone Grand Prix is a staple of the racing season; one of the most famous, and most dramatic, circuits on the Formula One calendar.
It has been the home of the British Grand Prix for the last 49 years, and the 2014 Grand Prix in July will be the 50th Formula One event it has hosted – making it only the third track in history to do so.
For many years, Silverstone has been a source of British pride and joy. It has had some rough moments and some wonderful ones; the moment when Nigel Mansell picked up his friend Ayrton Senna, whose McLaren had run out of fuel, and gave him a lift back to the pit lane after his monumental win in 1991 comes to mind.
The record for British men winning at Silverstone is incredible. Between 1955 and 2000, no fewer than five British drivers achieved multiple wins on the circuit – and of course, nobody could forget the most recent home win in 2008, when former world champion Lewis Hamilton stormed Silverstone and won the British Grand Prix, as a British driver, in a British car.
And this year, it looks like he might do it again. Mercedes are dominating the calendar so far, with their star driver Hamilton winning four out of five races. If their success continues, we could very well see a British winner crowned once again at Silverstone’s monumental 50th Formula One Grand Prix.
