Get Ship Shape for the PSP Southampton Boat Show 2013

This September, Europe’s biggest on-water boat show will be returning to streets, shores and marinas of Southampton.

The annual PSP Southampton Boat Show (13th – 22nd September) is your chance to see thousands of modern and classic yachts, motorboats, powerboats, dinghies, and RIBs, mingle with suppliers and industry experts and experience one-of-a-kind sailing activities.

Set sail for Southampton

This year, there are several new attractions to see and take part in. The Battle of the Classes Pursuit Race will see up to 100 boats (2 from each boat class) trying to get ahead of the boats in front of them in an exciting chase contest.

Meanwhile, the Wooden Boatbuilders Trade Association will be showing the painstaking work that goes into constructing a boat, with a live demonstration of wooden boatbuilding. As always, you can see (and climb on board) the range of famous and historic Feature Boats which are visiting this year’s Boat Show. The 2013 line-up includes:

  • Phoenicia, a 2010 replica of a 600 BC Phoenician/Mediterranean trading vessel, which recreated the epic voyage around Africa first undertaken by the ancient Phoenicians
  • 107-year-old Bessie Ellen, the last surviving West Country wooden trading ketch, formerly part of a 700-strong fleet of ketches
  • Jasmina and Caterham Challenge, two yachts competing in the Global Ocean Race starting in 2014
  • Castilla, a purpose-built catamaran on loan from the National Oceanography Centre, designed for scientific research

There’s the usual range of fascinating attractions on offer this year, including the return of the popular RYA Active Marina Experience following its success in 2012. This series of on-water workshops is great for brushing up on your boating skills, offering you the chance to meet expert sailing instructors and gain some great insider knowledge.

There are also a wealth of exhibitor stalls and vendors at the event, where you can find all manner of sailing equipment and supplies, as well as marina property and boat insurance.

Boat show by helicopter

If you’re planning a visit to the Southampton Boat Show, there’s no better way to travel than via a return flight in a private helicopter. You’ll avoid the gridlocked traffic (which is always particularly heavy while the Boat Show is taking place), arrive in style by touching down on the Southampton docks themselves, and with no need to stay under the drink-drive limit you’re free to enjoy a cocktail or two. You can even stay for a little longer with our flexible booking service.
