Racing’s Favourite Festival
The Cheltenham Festival takes place over four days, opening with the mouth-watering Champion Day on March 15th.
Champion Day
Accompanied by the famous Cheltenham Roar, the tapes will go up on seven cracking races including the highlight, the Stan James’ Champion Hurdle. Twelve months ago, trainer Willie Mullins bagged four winners that day including Faugheen, winner of the grade 1 race.
Ladies’ Day
March 16th is Ladies’ Day, so VIP yourself into your best dress, straighten your hat and dress for the best. Gents, don’t forget your Tweeds! Ladies’ Day is definitely the day to been seen.
There are seven more races to savour, including the highlight, the two-mile Betway Queen Mother Champion Chase. In 2015, jockey Sam Twiston-Davies won the grade 1 race aboard his mount, Dodging Bullet.
St Patrick’s Thursday
Cheltenham has become known as the second home of the Irish, there to celebrate any win by one of the legions of horses from the Emerald Isle. That’s why St Patrick’s Thursday is bristling with excitement – just a few days before St Patrick’s Day itself!
On offer is a highly competitive card of races, including the Ryanair Chase and the Ladbrokes World Hurdle. St Patrick’s Thursday will kick off with the JLT Novices’ Chase. Don’t miss the Ladbrokes World Hurdle Race or the Trull House Stud Mare Novice Hurdles, before the day closes with the Fulke Walwyn Kim Muir Challenge Cup.
Gold Cup Day
All roads point to the Cheltenham Gold Cup which brings the festival to a climax for one of the best day’s jump racing of the year. The Timico Cheltenham Gold Cup is the centre-piece of the day, which was won in 2015 by the novice chaser Coneygree in only his fourth outing over fences.
The day includes six other magical races, including two more Grade 1 events and three fiercely competitive handicaps.
Gold Cup Day is likely to be a sell-out, so you need to book your tickets early.
