History of The De Vere Horwood Estate

The De Vere Horwood Estate has had a fascinating history. Originally a 300-year-old farmhouse, it was upgraded in the early 1900s by Frederick Denny (who had made his fortune in pork and bacon) with imported red brick and roof tiles from the Netherlands.
In the 1960’s it was a school and then became a business and conference centre for British Rail, the GPO and finally BT.
For gardeners of a certain age, Percy Thrower has a great association with these grounds as he learned his trade here with his father before moving to Windsor and the resulting TV fame.
Since 1992, Horwood House has been a hotel and international conference centre under Hayley Conference Centres which later became part of Principal Hayley Hotels and Venues, and most recently joined the De Vere division within The Principal Hotel Company.
