Buckingham Palace Adds Hambledon Sparkle To State Banquet
There was some great news this week for one of our business partners, Hambledon Vineyard, whose English sparkling wine was chosen by the Buckingham Palace wine team to be served at this week’s State Banquet.
Ian Kellett, Managing Director of Hambledon Vineyard said: “We are delighted the Palace wine team chose our sparkling wine, along with Windsor Great Park’s, for Her Majesty to serve at the State Banquet for the President of the United States,”
“As an Englishman, this is a great honour, and for the team at Hambledon a well-deserved reward for their years of dedication. This also puts English fizz firmly on the wine map and it feels we’re turning the corner on proving that sparkling wine from England is fit for the most prestigious occasions.”
Their Hampshire vineyard is only a six-minute flight from our Alton base and it doesn’t seem like three years ago that we arrived to take delivery of the first batch of cases.
Back then serving English sparkling was a bold move, but as always with these things, once you’ve tasted the ‘fizz’ there’s no turning back as our managing director Mike Burns points out.
“We’re now in our third year of serving exclusively Hambledon’s English sparkling wine at our Silverstone VIP Arrivals Lounge for the British Grand Prix . Our clients love the flavours,” he said.
“In some respects, you could say it was a brave decision because English wine has always been seen as a second cousin to its French counterparts. However, having Buckingham Palace’s wine team confirm its brilliance by making it part of the state banquet, is very satisfying.”
The Palace accolade comes at an ideal time for Hambledon who are in the process of building a million bottle cellar at their vineyard as they seek to expand the production from their vines as well as increase their cooperation with other growers in the region.
You might not know but essential Hampshire chalk is the same vein of rock that flows through the Champagne region and within this county, there are many quality houses all producing award-winning wines.
