Award Winning English Sparkling Wine For VIP Lounge

We’re proud to announce that one of the best English sparkling wines will be served exclusively at our Silverstone VIP lounge during the British Grand Prix this summer.

The wine comes from Hambledon Vineyard in Hampshire, an organisation also dedicated to detail in every way and only a six-minute flight from our Lasham base.

Not only does their sparkling wine taste wonderful but it is also beating their champagne cousins. At the end of 2016, their Classic Cuvée Rose won Gold at the International Wine Challenge, making it the only sparkling rose in the world to win this acclaimed award!

Our Managing Director Mike Burns is delighted with this partnership: “The hallmark event of Atlas Helicopter’s year is our VIP arrivals lounge at the British Grand Prix and we’re delighted to be able to offer something that tastes delicious and is also made in England.”

The Hambledon Vineyard is on the same seam of chalk as Champagne, FranceThe Hambledon Vineyard is on the same seam of chalk as Champagne

A Union Of England and France Brings Sparkling Wine to Hampshire.

Hambledon was not the first Vineyard to plant ‘champagne’ bearing vines in Hampshire but they are the first to make a great success of the same chalk seam that runs under the Champagne region.

Using traditional methods, with help from French experts in all guises and by planting Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes the chalky, south facing slopes around Hambledon are bearing an award winning wine.

It was Ian Kellett in 1999 who began to revive the vineyards at Hambledon, studying oenology at Plumpton College in Sussex and rejuvenating the vineyard’s old relationship with the Champagne house Pol Roger.

Back then English wine didn’t have the best of reputations but by investing in the right people, equipment and backers, along with grit, patience and determination, he’s made Hambledon a centre of excellence in the wine industry.

Along with his brother Phillip, Ian Kellett and has attracted the best in the industry to work with them and at the head of this guidance is Hervé Jestin, one of Champagne’s leading chefs de cave and a renowned expert in minimal-intervention wine making.

This is why Hambledon has the only gravity-fed, state-of-the-art winery in the UK, have expanded to 50 acres of vines, and planning a tasting room and visitor centre in the near future.

As Mike Burns, Atlas Helicopters’ Managing Director pointed out: “When it comes to our clients we always deliver the best service possible and the fine quality of Hambledon’s sparkling wine fits nicely with our exacting standards.”

Tours Inside and Over

We flew to the vineyard to collect the wine and also gave the Hambledon team a bird’s eye view of their acres and survey the recently pruned vines.

This certainly made the day special in many ways and even though we don’t need to be reminded, it was great to witness the pleasure that a helicopter flight brings.

Our reward was a tour of the winery and a detailed account of how Hambledon produce their sparkling wine. The precision that is required certainly makes you admire the skill and patience that they pour into just one glass.

The tour was hosted by Steve Lowrie and we were also joined by Hambledon’s Phillip Kellett and from Peake Wine Associates, Roy Gillingham, whose wine tasting event introduced us to the joys of Hambledon’s sparkling excellence.

This visit coincided with the arrival of a team of French experts who had brought their disgorging equipment to the UK. This line of machines automatically puts the finishing touches to the sparkling wine. This process that used to be done by hand so Hambledon can now begin to satisfy demand for their product.

During our visit, we were also lucky enough to waft the aromas from Hambledon’s brandy, slowly maturing in French oak barrels. It should be ready by 2022 and to some noses it already smelt perfect! However, after being introduced to this whole operation, where the expertise is of the highest order, we’re inclined to follow professionals’ guidance.

“As a helicopter charter company we have to be dedicated to detail and once you have toured Hambledon’s winery it is obvious to see they share the same principles in their sparkling wine production. The only difference is time,” Mike said after the visit.

“While Atlas Helicopters want to offer a charter service that moves people quickly around the UK, Hambledon have to follow the seasons and fermentation process. However, the result is ultimately and importantly the same – very satisfied customers.”

We flew home with every spare space filled with a box of either Classic or Premier Cuvée, or the Classic Cuvée Rose, delighted at the opportunity to partner with such an excellent English company.

We hope you join us for a glass of Hambledon’s English sparkling wine at Silverstone this year and amid the F1 glamour of the British Grand Prix, raise a toast to the union of England and France in the chalk valleys of sunny Hampshire.
